The Performance Leader in Telemark Ski Bindings

The Performance Leader in Telemark Ski Bindings

Since our humble beginnings in 1987, Rainey Designs' Telemark ski bindings have become legendary as we have relentlessly set the standard for other Telemark ski bindings to follow. Our passion has always been to maximize performance while pursuing excellence, and our design decisions are guided by our desire to innovate Telemark skiing into its future.

Pioneering innovations like stainless steel toeplates, compression springs, one-piece toeplates, dual underfoot cables, integrated binding shims, toe-bars, extra mounting screws, moveable cable guides, 2000 pound test cables, one-size-fits-all cable bindings, integrated ski crampons and many more, have all come from Rainey Designs' quest for maximum Telemark performance. We knew long before it was a reality that Telemark skiing could be as exciting and high performing as any other snow sport on the planet.

But even with all our dedication to downhill performance, we have never lost our love for the backcountry. Our bindings continue to simultaneously set the curve for both downhill and backcountry performance. Whether you are on a multi-week Antarctic exploration or out for a day of adrenalin pumping fun, Rainey Designs' Telemark ski bindings will allow you to perform your best.

HammerHead to be Produced by TwentyTwo Designs

Russell Rainey, founder of Rainey Designs and creator of the acclaimed HammerHead and SuperLoop telemark bindings, has announced the sale of the HammerHead to TwentyTwo Designs, LLC, also based in Wilson, Wyoming. TwentyTwo Designs will now exclusively manufacture and distribute the HammerHead.

The new company, taking its name from the legendary Wyoming Highway 22, which runs through Wilson up and over Teton Pass, consists of Chris Valiante and Collins Pringle. They will continue Russell’s tradition of skier-designed and technically innovative telemark bindings. TwentyTwo Designs will focus on increasing consumer exposure and distribution of the HammerHead while maintaining the highest level of quality control standards. Russell will continue to provide design and production advice to TwentyTwo Designs, as he moves into a full-time position with Christ in the Tetons, a Christian outdoor adventure ministry he helped to found.

Chris and Collins are lifelong skiers and mechanical engineers with considerable product design experience. While working with Rainey Designs in 2003, Chris completely redesigned the HammerHead’s heel plate and climbing bar. This revolutionary new HammerHeel design has been critically acclaimed by both users and the media for its simplicity, functionality, and ease of use.

TwentyTwo Designs has already begun a research and development program to aggressively develop innovative new designs, and Rainey is excited to remain involved as part of the design team. His years of experience as the most significant innovator of freeheel bindings, in combination with Chris and Collins’ youthful energy, knowledge, passion and commitment, assures that TwentyTwo Designs will continue to follow in the Rainey tradition, taking the leading role in telemark binding development.

The End of a Telemark Era

Production and sale of the SuperLoop telemark binding, the longest running cable binding in modern telemark history, is being discontinued. First produced in 1987, when the stiffest telemark boot available was the Asolo Snowfield, the SuperLoop has, over the last 17 years, innovated and introduced most of the essential features of today’s telemark bindings.

Pioneering innovations like stainless steel toeplates, compression springs, integrated binding shims, toe-bars, extra mounting screws, moveable cable guides, 2000 pound test cables, one-size-fits-all cable bindings, integrated ski crampons and many more, were all first introduced by the SuperLoop, but even with all these specific feature innovations, undoubtedly, the most revolutionary contribution the SuperLoop has made to the sport of telemark skiing was the concept that a binding could actually improve skiing performance. “When I first started telling people that a binding could improve their tele skiing I actually had established industry figures laugh out loud in my face, but after they skied the SuperLoop they stopped laughing and started buying,” Rainey said. “I have had more than my share of successes and failures with the SuperLoop, but overall, I am very pleased with what the SuperLoop has contributed to the sport I love so much.”

The remaining stock of SuperLoops and SuperLoop Accessories are for sale at raineydesigns.com. These products are being significantly discounted until the supply is exhausted. A considerable amount of spare parts will be kept in inventory for any future warranty and service needs.
