Redecorating Basics: Start with an Inspiration Piece Written By Judy May, IFDA, Owner & President, Fantastique Designs LLC
The most popular question people ask has got to be: “We’re redecorating our bedroom [of course, you may insert the room of your choice], but don’t know where to begin. Should we first decide on the wall color for the room? Or should we choose the fabric for the window treatments? Or should we instead pick out the new bed and other furniture? HELP!”
The short answer is: find a source of inspiration. What follows is the full-blown detailed version. I hope it helps you get started as you work to create the home of your dreams……one room at a time!
Without a doubt, it can be an intimidating process to redecorate a room from scratch. There are so many decisions to be made – wall color, floor covering, window treatments, furnishings. The list goes on and on – not to mention the issue of room layout! But, rest assured, there is a logical starting point from which other decisions will naturally flow: and that starting point is an inspiration piece.
By inspiration piece I mean that you should find something that truly inspires you. Maybe your inspiration piece could be a new comforter you recently found that contains colors you absolutely love. Or, perhaps, your source of inspiration will be a drapery fabric with an interesting print. Or maybe it’s an area rug with a beautiful pattern. Or may be your inspiration will be an antique hand-painted bureau that’s been in your family for generations. In any event, the first step toward putting together a beautiful new bedroom – or any room for that matter – is finding an inspiration piece. After you’ve identified your source of inspiration, take it with you (or, in the case of an antique piece of furniture, take a picture of it with you) as you venture out to choose the right wall color, flooring, window treatment, etc.
As an example, when deciding on a wall color, look at the inspiration piece and choose one of the dominant colors you see. The wall color you choose need NOT match the dominant color found in the inspiration piece exactly. Rather, you need only choose a shade of the dominant color (for example, if one of the dominant colors is red, you may choose to paint the walls burgundy, rose – or even pink – since these are all different shades of red.) Then, when choosing the window treatment, make sure the fabric you choose contains this same dominant color (or a shade of it) as well as 1 or 2 additional colors found in your inspiration piece. If everything you choose coordinates with your inspiration piece, you simply can’t go wrong!
One final note: don’t get caught up in the latest trends or what your neighbors tell you you “should” have in your bedroom. With every choice you make, simply select things you like. It is, after all, your master retreat that you’re decorating! Good luck!
